Tell us if things change

Withdrawing your registration

You can withdraw your registration in ImmiAccount at any time during the ballot process.

For more information, see Refunds.

Stay lawful

A registration in the MATES ballot is not a visa application.

If you are in Australia and your visa is about to expire, you must apply for another visa to remain in Australia lawfully, or depart Australia.

You will not be granted a bridging visa by submitting a ballot registration.

If you are selected in the MATES ballot, you can only apply for a Subclass 403 MATES stream visa from outside Australia.

Ballot selection process

Registrations will be selected at random.

We cannot give you information about the status of your ballot. We will tell you if you are successful in the ballot.

Once the ballot selection process shows as ‘expired’ on the Ballot status table, no more registrations will be selected.

You can find more information on the status of a ballot registration period on the ballot overview page.

If you are successful in the ballot

If you are randomly selected in the ballot we will send you a Notification of Selection letter. This letter will provide details on how to apply for a Subclass 403 MATES stream visa.

You will have 30 calendar days from the date of selection to complete and submit a visa application online. You must apply for the visa on or before the date specified in your notification letter. We cannot accept your application if you apply after this date. You can find more information on the Subclass 403 MATES stream Eligibility page.

You must complete the visa application using the same passport that you used to register in the ballot.

If your passport expires between the time of ballot registration and time of visa application, you must let us know. You can tell us about your change in passport details via ImmiAccount. For more information see You have a new passport.

Your national ID (PAN) card

If you are selected in the ballot, you must give us a copy of your national ID (PAN) card when you apply for your Subclass 403 MATES stream visa. You can attach it under 'Additional documents' after you submit your visa application. We will use your national ID (PAN) card to verify your identity.

Things to keep in mind

  • If you do not hold a valid national ID (PAN) card or do not give your correct ID card details, you may not be able to register in the ballot.
  • If you do not give us a copy of your national ID (PAN) card with your visa application, it may delay the processing of your application.
  • If you are selected, the national ID (PAN) card details you give on your ballot registration form and your visa application form must be the same. You will not be able to apply if your ID card details do not match.

You must submit your visa application using the link provided to you in the notification email or through your ImmiAccount. Make sure you submit your application on time so you do not miss out.

If you are unsuccessful in the ballot

If you are not randomly selected in the ballot you cannot apply for the Subclass 403 MATES stream visa.

Ballot registration expiry

Your registration will expire after we finalise the ballot selection process.

If the status of your registration in ImmiAccount is ‘expired’, it means that you are no longer registered in the ballot.

You may be able to register in the next ballot process if you still meet the eligibility requirements.
