Make sure you know how the new rules affect you before making visa, training, travel or relocation plans.
From 12 November 2026, new rules change where you can apply for and be granted a Training visa (subclass 407).
Applicants must be outside Australia when they apply for a Training visa and when we grant it.
If you are in Australia and want to apply for a Training visa, you will need to leave Australia before applying.
From 12 November 2026, your application will be invalid if you apply while in Australia. This applies even if ImmiAccount allows you to submit an application.
Lodging an invalid application may affect your visa status. If your visa has already expired, you may not be eligible to apply for another visa. A decision that your application is invalid cannot be merits reviewed.
Lodging a Training visa application does not guarantee that your visa will be granted. You must meet all visa requirements, and your application will be assessed before a decision is made.
Prepare before you travel
If you are in Australia and need to apply for a Training visa from outside Australia, prepare your application before you leave.
Before travelling:
- Check when your current visa expires and make sure you leave Australia before it expires
- Confirm that your sponsor’s sponsorship and your nomination have both been approved
- Gather the documents you need for your Training visa application.
- Check whether you need a health examination and whether you can complete it before leaving Australia
- Plan for the fact that you need to be outside Australia for your visa to be granted. Applying for a Training visa does not guarantee that it will be granted.
Once you are outside Australia, submit your application through ImmiAccount. Check your account regularly and respond promptly to requests for further information.
You may travel to Australia on another valid visa while we process your Training visa application. You must comply with that visa’s conditions. You will not receive a Bridging visa linked to an application lodged outside Australia.
You must be outside Australia when your Training visa is granted.
Processing times vary. Do not make travel arrangements to return to Australia based on an expected visa grant date.
Applications lodged before 12 November
If you submitted a valid Training visa application before 12 November 2026, the new rules will not apply to your application.
We will continue to assess your application under the rules in place when you applied.
This includes the changes that came into effect on 11 March 2026.
Before you can apply for a Training visa, you will need to wait for:
- Your sponsor to be approved as a temporary activities sponsor, and
- Your sponsor to have an approved Training visa nomination for you, unless your sponsor is a Commonwealth agency.
