Youth Transition Support and Youth Hubs Trial evaluation report 2022
In December 2022, the Department evaluated the Youth Transition Support (YTS) and Youth Hubs Trial (YHT). The report assessed and proposed services for migrant and refugee young people aged 12 to 30. It focuses on improving their social and economic participation by preparing them for employment and training. It also supports connections to their local communities.
You can view our report on Young people with refugee and migrant background.
Some main findings from the report include:
- Services for migrant and refugee young people need to be flexible. They need to be responsive to and address the differences and ongoing changes in young people’s needs. Settlement supports that young people with migrant and or refugee backgrounds receive can affect their ability to create a rich and full life in Australia. It may also affect whether they experience ongoing barriers to building and spending social capital.
- Addressing barriers results in positive outcomes for young people, their local communities and Australian society.
- YTS/YHT have shown many benefits to young people and their communities. This includes:
- building language skills and confidence
- supporting mental health and wellbeing
- supporting them to engage in education, training and employment.
- The programs have helped providers:
- foster partnerships with mainstream service providers
- reduce duplication of services
- increase program reach, effectiveness and efficiency.
We will use the findings of this evaluation to inform future progran design for support services.
