Improved data on refugees and humanitarian entrants

The Coordinator-General has led the development of the Refugee and Humanitarian Entrant Data Plan 2021-23. The Data Plan articulates a strategy for the Australian Government to better measure outcomes against key factors or outcomes areas that the international evidence identifies as critical for successful settlement and integration. The Data Plan also sets out a series of indicators and measures aimed at improving monitoring of each outcome. The Data Plan has established priorities to improve the availability and use of data over the 2021-23 period, including to improve reporting of currently available data sources or to make reporting easier.

As part of the Data Plan, the Coordinator-General’s Office is working closely with the Australian Bureau of Statistics to identify new opportunities to strengthen data collection and reporting through the Multi-Agency Data Integration Project on refugee employment, education, housing and health outcomes.

The Coordinator-General is also working with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare to develop refugee and humanitarian health and welfare datasets that will support annual outcomes reporting and provide opportunities for further specialist analysis, providing an evidence base for assessing healthcare needs and access to healthcare services.

The Coordinator-General is also engaging the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute to survey refugees and humanitarian entrants, about their integration experiences. The engagement will provide a rich data source on refugee and humanitarian entrant integration experiences, including social connectedness within and outside of their own ethnic or religious community, identification with Australia, feelings of safety and trust, access to government services and digital literacy.
