​Setting up your Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)

There are ​two ​options to set up MFA for ImmiAccount:

Option 1: Authenticator app on your mobile device or personal computer (PC)​​​

Mobile device

If you haven’t installed an authenticator app, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open your mobile device's app store (App Store for iOS, Google Play Store for Android).
  2. Search for your desired authenticator app. There are several reputable authenticator apps including Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and Duo Mobile.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.

When you are ready to set up MFA in ImmiAccount follow the steps below:

  1. Login to ImmiAccount and follow the step-by-step instructions on the screen. Open your authenticator app and add a new account (plus[+] icon or ‘Add account’).​

  2. You will be shown two options:

    • Use your authenticator app to scan the QR code displayed on the ImmiAccount screen.
    • If you cannot scan the QR code you can manually enter the shared secret key displayed on the screen in your authenticator app.

Once you have set up your authenticator app with the QR code or shared secret key, you’re ready to start using MFA.

Personal Computer (PC)

Download KeePass to your PC from the KeePass home page and follow the instructions. When you are ready to set up MFA in ImmiAccount you’ll be given a shared secret code to use in KeePass.

为了加强ImmiAccount的安全性能，我们将设置多重要素验证（MFA）。

首先，从设备的小程序商店里下载一个验证小程序，比如Microsoft Authenticator。

打开小程序，选择添加一个新账户。您可以选择扫二维码或手动输入提供的密钥。

添加账户后，验证小程序将生成一个有时效性的代码。将这个代码输入ImmiAccount进行验证。

现在MFA已经设置好了。记住，每次登录ImmiAccount时都需要用一个新的代码进行验证。

试着重新登录，测试一下设置。

现在您的ImmiAccount的安全性能已大大提高。

 

Option 2​: Help – I need another option (email authentication)

Email-based authentication is less secure than using an authenticator app as email accounts can be compromised. Select this option only if absolutely necessary.

Using the email authentication option, a code will be sent to your verified email address. Enter the 6 digit code into ImmiAccount. The ‘Email authentication has been enabled’ screen will display.

Log in with MFA

On successful login a 6 digit code will be displayed on your authenticator app or sent to your verified email address, depending on the method you have chosen.

Successful submission of an authentication code will take you to a successful login page. You can then navigate to other pages in your ImmiAccount.

Common Issues

I don’t have a mobile device or don’t want to use an authenticator app

You can use an email token to authenticate. In ImmiAccount select ‘Help – I need another option’. Note that email token is a less secure option.

You can only authenticate using an app or by email.  There are no other options.

If you do not have access to your emails, you will need to ensure that you have a verified email address linked to your ImmiAccount.

I don’t know which authenticator app to use

 If you don’t have any of the apps shown on the screen, you can download another authenticator app.  Most authenticator apps are free.

The Department of Home Affairs does not have its own authenticator app.

 My authenticator app isn’t working

Try restarting your device or the app itself.

If this still doesn’t work, try reinstalling or updating it. Check your authenticator app home page for troubleshooting.

You do not need an internet connection to use an authenticator app.  You will only require an internet connection to download and install it.

I cannot scan the QR code

If your mobile devices does not have a camera or doesn’t work to scan the QR code you can type in the shared secret code displayed on the screen.

I cannot locate the 6 digit code

Your authenticator app provides a Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP), which is a 6 digit code that changes every 30 seconds.

If you have more than one account linked to your authenticator app, make sure that you are using the correct TOTP for the account you are logging in to.

A TOTP is time based and relies on your device’s clock.  Ensure that your devices clock/time is correct.

I cannot locate the email token

An email token stays valid for 15 minutes.

If you cannot locate the email token, check your spam and junk folders and make sure your email provider isn’t blocking authentication messages.
